Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language is the higher ESL pathway, written for learners who already have a working knowledge of English and study through the English medium. It develops practical fluency across reading, writing, listening and speaking, and carries a separately reported Speaking endorsement.

Both are written for learners whose first language is not English. 0510 assumes a working knowledge of English and study through the English medium, so it moves faster and expects a higher level of fluency, and it carries a separately reported Speaking endorsement. If you are unsure which pathway suits your child, our admissions team will advise after a short placement assessment.
There are three components: Paper 1 (Reading and Writing), Paper 2 (Listening, entirely multiple choice) and Component 3 (the Speaking Test). Since June 2024 there is no Core and Extended tiering — every candidate sits the same papers and can reach the full range of grades.
On 0510 the Speaking Test is reported separately as a Speaking endorsement, so it does not affect the grade awarded for the written components. Cambridge publishes a count-in speaking version of the same course as syllabus 0511 if you need speaking folded into the overall grade.
Students should already be able to follow lessons in English — roughly B1 and above on the CEFR scale. We run a short placement assessment before enrolment so that nobody is put on the wrong pathway.
Yes. Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language is recognised worldwide as evidence of English proficiency. Some universities still ask for IELTS or an equivalent for specific courses, so check the entry requirements of your target institution.
Cambridge offers 0510 in the June and November exam series, plus a March series in India. Our exam coordinator helps families register at their nearest approved Cambridge exam centre.
